The University of Milan, established in 1924, is a research-intensive university, offering high quality teaching at all levels in a broad spectrum of fields. Over the years, it has succeeded in maintaining a skillful blend of tradition and innovation, adjusting to the requirements of a fast-growing society without putting aside its distinctive traits.

The University of Milan is the top Italian university in most international rankings and is the only Italian university among the 22 prestigious institutions that belong to the League of European Research Universities (LERU). It is one of the largest universities in Italy with approximately 65,000 enrolled students and an important point of cultural, artistic and scientific reference for its socio-economic context. The University’s interdisciplinary vocation and the connections between a wide range of fields create a highly stimulating environment for study and work in its 10 Faculties, 137 study programmes, 22 doctoral schools and several vocationally-oriented courses.

The Stages project at UMIL, is coordinated by the Interdepartmental Centre for Study and Research “Women and Gender Differences”. Created in 1995 within the Faculty of Political Sciences, the Centre is one of the first in Italy promoting research, teaching, training and dissemination activities in the field of Gender Studies. In 2007, the Centre becomes an Interdepartmental Centre with the aim of developing and fostering a  multidisciplinary approach to Gender Studies. Currently run by Prof. Luisa Leonini, chaired by Prof. Bianca Beccalli and coordinated by Dott. Daniela Falcinelli, it is hosted by the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Milan.
